Prayagraj, June 12

The Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) demolished the home of Javed Ahmad, alias Pump, the alleged mastermind of Friday’s violence here, on Sunday amid a heavy police deployment.

A day earlier, the properties of two people accused of rioting were demolished in Saharanpur where stone throwing also took place.

Saharapur City Police Superintendent Rajesh Kumar said two defendants who created rowdy were identified through CCTV footage as Muzammil, a resident of Rahat Colony, 62 Futa Road, and Abdul Vakir , a resident of Khata Khedi. Municipal corporation crews bulldozed their illegal properties, he said.

In Prayagraj, a senior PDA official said: “The house of Javed Ahmad – JK Ashiyana – is located in Kareli neighborhood in Prayagraj. Police forces and a JCB machine reached Kareli police station around 10:30 a.m. and demolition began around 1 p.m.

“The house was built without passing his card through the PDA. For this, he received notice on May 10 and was asked to present his views on May 24. On the said date, neither Javed nor his lawyer No documents were presented in this regard, and so on May 25, demolition orders were issued,” the PDA official said.

Prayagraj Police Chief Superintendent Ajay Kumar said on Saturday that the suspected mastermind of the stone throwing, Javed Ahmad, had been arrested.

In a Hindi tweet on Saturday, Mrityunjay Kumar, the chief minister’s media adviser, said: ‘Remember the unruly elements, every Friday is followed by a Saturday’ and posted a picture of a bulldozer demolishing a building .

On Friday, people threw stones at police personnel in Prayagraj and Saharanpur during protests after Friday prayers at mosques.

At least four other cities witnessed similar scenes during marches held to protest controversial remarks about the Prophet Muhammad made by now-suspended BJP spokesman Nupur Sharma.

In Prayagraj, the mob set fire to a few motorbikes and carts, and also tried to set fire to a police vehicle. Police used tear gas and lathis to disperse protesters and restore peace.

A police officer was injured, authorities said.

Sharma was suspended by the BJP as several Islamic nations denounced her comments on the Prophet in a televised debate.
